This simple & healthy vegan apple crisp recipe is the perfect fall dessert. It’s quick to make and can be made on even the smallest of budgets.
Enjoy it with a scoop of vegan ice cream, plant-based custard, a drizzle of cream, or even on its own.
Equipment
- 1 Large Bowl
- 1 Baking Dish
Ingredients
The Filling
- 3 Apples
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
- 50 grams Coconut Sugar
- 1/2 Lemon Juice
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 10 grams Cornstarch
- 20 mls Water
The Topping
- 40 mls Coconut Oil
- 30 grams Quick Oats (or old-fashioned oats)
- 30 grams Coconut Sugar
- 30 grams All Purpose Flour
- 20 grams Almond Meal (you can also use almond flour)
- 30 grams Pecan Nuts
- 1 Pinch of Salt
Instructions
The Filling
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.
- Core your apples and cut them into thin slices and place into a large bowl.
- Then add the rest of the filling ingredients in with your apple slices and mix until well combined.
- Place your apple mixture into a baking dish and spread out the apple layer evenly.
The Topping
- To create your crispy topping, place all of the topping ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
- Chop your pecan nuts and add to the dry ingredients.
- Then pour the melted coconut oil over the dry ingredients. Rub in the oil to create a crumble texture – a bit like rubble.
- Once you have your crumble consistency, sprinkle over the sliced apples. Don’t press the topping down as this is how you will get a crisp topping.
- Bake for 50 minutes or until the topping has turned golden brown.
- Once baked, leave to cool slightly for 5 minutes and serve!
Notes
Cooking apples or granny smith apples work the best in this recipe if you like a strong apple flavour wth a slight tartness.
However, if you just want a super sweet dessert then braeburn, golden delicious or cox apples work perfectly for added sweetness.
How To Serve This Vegan Apple Crumble
Cold Toppings
If you love the hot and cold aspect of food then try serving this classic dessert with a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream.
If you’re trying to be a little more healthy then perhaps a spoonful of coconut yogurt, or vegan creme fraiche could be the ideal topping for you.
Hot Toppings
Or, if you prefer your dessert to be all about the warmth, then you could simple serve it with a good helping of vegan custard.
If you want more apple, you could serve your apple crisp with a drizzle of hot applesauce.
To take it to another level, you could even drizzle your crumble with some warm caramel sauce. However, this will make it super sweet to take that into consideration.
How To Store Your Apple Crumble
Store your baked apple crumble in either an airtight container in the fridge.
Or, you could simply store it in the fridge in the original baking dish with some plastic wrap over the top to stop it from drying out.
This is one of the easiest desserts to make and is ideal when you want something warming and comforting.
