Travelling for me has always been something i love to do. From going on holidays with family growing up – to travelling to National sailing events up and down the country. Most of my childhood was spent staying in hotels and living out of various bags, wearing mainly sailing gear. Whereas these days travelling is a lot more comfortable and thought out. Less crumpled sailing gear out of supermarket bags, and more stylish luggage essentials to jet off in style.
What Luggage Do I Need?
If you’re only going on a short trip, it’s unlikely you’ll need a large suitcase – or perhaps no suitcase at all. Maybe all you’ll need is a rucksack, or perhaps some carry-on luggage. Personally, i like to travel as light as possible so will only take a proper suitcase if going on holiday for a few weeks.
My go-to hand luggage for shorter trips is a small rucksack, such as this one from Joules (image below). It’s small, yet big enough to carry the essentials in – such as…
- Laptop
- Headphones
- Snacks
- Phone
- Tickets/Passport
Then my main luggage is a small suitcase that will fit in the overhead lockers with all the essentials – clothes, shoes, bikini, personal care products…etc. My personal favourite case for trips like this is the Eastpak Tranvers XXS Cabin Case (image below). It fits perfectly into the overhead lockers, but it’s still big enough to fit everything you need for a long weekend. Plus, it has a pull up handle, and it’s on wheels, making it simple to travel with.
Security When Flying
These days you have to be so careful with security when travelling. Making sure important documents, cash, bank cards…etc are all well hidden and out of reach of pick-pockets. Even things like not taking expensive clothes or jewellery with me in my main hold suitcase. We flew to Boston USA once and my bag ended up in New York before being sent somewhere else – never to be seen again. These days, everything valuable to me stays with me or on me at all times.
On the odd occasion i do take a main hold suitcase with me, i make sure it’s locked – either with a combination lock or a key. I also use straps on the outside, just incase one of the zips breaks open. This way, if that does happen, there’s a chance it will stay closed. These straps each and just clips over your suitcase for added security.
Another great thing about these straps is that it helps you spot your suitcase as it comes round on the conveyor belt!
Think Comfort
When i’m at home one of the first things I do when I get in is put on my comfiest chilling clothes. A lovely thick pair of socks, followed by some comfy jogging bottoms and a warm and cozy top or hoodie.
So, I do exactly the same while travelling. A nice thick pair of cozy socks and my comfiest hoodie and joggers. I also find this helps if you’re feeling a bit anxious about flying. Make yourself feel as comfortable as possible and it can help with any anxiety about travelling.
Another item i take while travelling, especially if i’m feeling a little anxious is a hand held fan (about £2 from somewhere like Ebay). If I ever feel car sick, the first thing I do is open the window to get some fresh air in. You cant really open a window on a plane so I take a hand held fan instead. Something about the flowing air seems to really help reduce anxiety.
Entertainment While Travelling
Personally, I never take books with me to read on whilst travelling. They often make me feel travel sick, plus they’re quite bulky and heavy to carry around. Instead, I’ll take my own pair of noise cancelling headphones and either listen to a playlist or I’ll watch a movie on my laptop.
My go-to noise cancelling headphones at the moment are the Beats Studio Pro. They’re so comfortable to wear, have a long battery life and are lightweight – making them ideal for travelling.
I hope this has been helpful to you or has at least given you some ideas as to what might work for you to jet off in style.
